The Princess of Wales's Annual Christmas Service of Carols Honours Unsung Heroes

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary festive musical service at the iconic London venue, with a congregation comprising dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have supported their local areas.

The 1,600 guests will enjoy a mix of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from actors such as Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Centred Around Love and Generosity

The theme of the service, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on the afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

In the audience are a couple named the Cordiners, whose daughter died of a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, a support fund, to aid parents with a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any expectation or recognition, make an remarkable change to the well-being of people," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the carol service.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The princess has been making her own measured re-emergence to the public eye following her health challenges and treatment, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she discussed recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Musical Talent and Access

Those coming to the Abbey can listen to young musicians backed by the Future Talent organisation, established in part by the Duchess of Kent to increase availability of musical tuition.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been assisted by the organisation, with funding assisting with equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "amazing" to be playing at tonight's service.

"Pursuing music is often costly," she stated. She is now a student at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to develop their musical skills.

A Family Affair

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will be present at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Among the guests will be people from various age groups.

That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to collect donations for food banks.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been decorated with handcrafted festive wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Among the musical performers will be Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a nautical singing ensemble, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be aired by ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
